This morning I was watching some old editions of Liége-Bastogne-Liége, and damn — I’d almost forgotten that last year’s champion, Jakob Fuglsang of Astana, nearly had the race taken from him with 5k to go.

The Dane had launched a breakaway and was well on his way to his first Monunment win when he started into a supertuck on his descent into the Belgian city of Liége.

The road was a patchwork of wet and dry spots, and when Fuglsang’s tires went from wet to dry it nearly wiped him — and his hopes for a win — out.

Even a year later, it still stresses me out watching it.

Fuglsang impressively recovered, however, and glided down into the city alone. The win capped off an impressive 2019 spring for the former Dauphiné winner, who finished on the podium in La Fléche Wallonne, Strade Bianche, and Amstel Gold Race.
